While shooting airplane images over the years, Larry came to the realization that shooting an aircraft at the angle he wanted, with detail both in the shadows and in the highlights,
with the right lighting and the right background by air to air photography was virtually impossible
to do on a consistant baises.
So he created a photo illustration technique that allows him to do so.
A great deal of planning and passion goes into each aircraft image.
First Larry sketches out what he wants the final image to look like and then creates a shot list for each part of the image. Larry then goes out and photographs the various parts.
First the plane all by itself. This is where he controls the shadows and reflections and gets the
fine detail of the aircraft. Next the background is shot. This where you have to wait for nature to behave. The air to ground or cloud formation shots have to be taken at theright time of day
with the shadows in the correct position.
There are no short cuts in creating the final photo illustration. Usually there are around
20 pictures that have to be edited down to the 3 or 4 photos that will be used in the
final master image. The final master photo illustration takes many hours of painstakingly
detailed work to combine these separate photos, to re-illustrate parts of the scene and
to color balance the final master print file.
