About The Photographer

Larry McManus is an award winning professional photographer and graphic designer with over fourty years of experience. His work has been published and sold around the world and is currently represented by photo houses in New York, Spain and England. He owns an Advertising Agency ( www.clearpointadv.com ) with offices in Tustin, California and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

While shooting aircraft over the years, Larry McManus came to the realization that shooting air to air and getting the right angle, background and detail consistently was impossible. So calling on his skills as a designer, he created a photo illustration technique that allows him to create beautiful large format detailed aircraft images just the way he envisions them.

The Creation Process

A great deal of planning and passion goes into each large format image.

The Concept…

First Larry sketches out what he wants the final image to look like and then creates a shot list for the various parts of the image. Locations need to be identified for the background and aircraft shots and models need to be hired. Only then is he ready to shoot the various parts of the image.

The Plane…

By shooting the plane by itself on the ground in a controlled situation, he can get much better deatil and dynamic range in the image than shooting in the air. The plane is set up at the right angle with the shadow in the right direction. The pilot is positioned and looking in the right direction and the plane is trimmed out with the control surfaces in the correct positions. Multiple shots are taken at various exposures and different angles can be easily achieved during the photo session.

The Background…

This is where you have to wait for nature to behave. The air to ground or cloud formation shots have to be taken at the right time of day with the shadows in the correct position to fit in with the plane shot. When shooting the background from the air and not worrying about getting the plane in the exact position in the sky, you are able to shoot more angles to make sure the background an the plane have the most impact. Also by shooting the background by itself and not worrying about exposing a plane in the air you can create a more dynamic background image that has better color saturation to make the aircraft pop out of the image.

The Creation…

There are no short cuts in creating the final large format photo illustration. You start by editing the shots down to the ones that will be used in the final master image ( that is usually around 8 to 10). This is where Larry’

s background as a designer/artist comes in. The final 2 GB master image can take forty hours or more of painstakingly detailed work to combine all the photos, re-illustrate parts of the scene and to color balance the final image to achieve the original vision.

Displaying:

These prints come to you two ways. Unmounted in a tube so you can custom frame it to fit a certain decor or mounted on 1/2″ black Gatorboard ready to hang on the wall.

Prints Quality:

Each print is a one of a kind printed on a “LightJet 5000″ photo laser printer, capable of producing 68 billion colors. These prints are not printed using inks. To achieve the fantastic detail and saturated color my images are printed using actual red, green and blue lasers on photographic material and then processed through chemical baths. This gives you true continuous tone photographs with no visible dots like lithography printing gives you. This printing method is far superior in detail and color depth than old fashion Lithograph printing. All prints are signed and dated by Larry McManus when they are printed.
